Faith in Jesus
Combined with
Prayer and Fasting
Overcomes Demonic Powers
You are of God, little children,
and have overcome them, because
He who is in you is greater
than he who is in the world.

Luke 9:37-43 Matthew 17:14-21 Mark 9:14-29
Look at our text and the story that unfolds …
The disciples had watched Jesus cast out demons on
numerous occasions. They themselves had done this.
Yet here was a case that seemed impossible.
They were not able, or so they thought ...
Battleground: It must be understood that we are not
in paradise. We are in a spiritual war zone!
Satan is a real living spirit and he has many followers,
demonic spirits, who chose to follow his evil leading.
Demons are real. Lies, rebellion, corrupt ideas …
From Eden, down throughout history, we see the
results of Satan’s destructive works. He is a liar, a
cunning deceiver, a murderer, a destroyer of all good.
GOD is able to deliver us from demonic strongholds.
It must be understood and believed that we are able,
with God’s help, to stand against and resist and
overcome the demonic powers.
Matthew 6:9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our
Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as
it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our
debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us
from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the
power and the glory forever. Amen. (also Luke 11:2-4)

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the
Lord and in the power of His might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be
able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the
rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual
hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil
and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour.
9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the
same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood
in the world.

Jesus identifies two areas of weakness that the
disciples and we must strengthen.
1. Faith … to exercise faith is to know truth, be
persuaded and convinced by truth, have complete
agreement with truth, and so to act.
Hebrews 11:1 Faith is confident assurance of things
expected and convincing conviction of things not seen.

2. Prayer & Fasting
Prayer is to plead, petition, implore, request, entreat,
or ask God, with reverence, recognizing who God is.
Fasting is to abstain from eating and drinking, resting
or pleasures; for the purpose of drawing near to God
in earnest devotion and prayer.
Acts 10:30 So Cornelius said, "Four days ago I was
fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed
in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in
bright clothing,
31 and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard,
and your alms are remembered in the sight of God.
Acts 14:23 So when they had appointed elders in
every church, and prayed with fasting, they
commended them to the Lord in whom they had
believed.
1 Corinthians 7:5 Do not deprive one another except
with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves
to fasting and prayer; and come together again so
that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of
self-control.
Nehemiah 1:4 So it was, when I heard these words,
that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many
days; I was fasting and praying before the God of
heaven.
5 And I said: "I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great
and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and
mercy with those who love You and observe Your
commandments, … read to verse 11
