Luke 7:36-50: “Love, Forgiveness and Faith”
Sun. June 10th 2018 – Pastor Stephan
Sermon Outline
I. God’s Love and Mercy is the Greatest Reason why we should Love and Obey Him (Luke 7:36-47).
A. Sin is a debt. Sinners are debtors to Almighty God, some more than others (vs. 36-43a).
B. Whether our debts are more or less, we are unable to pay. God is ready to forgive sinners upon gospel terms (vs. 43b).
C. Those who receive forgiveness ought to love the One who pardoned them (vs. 44-47a).
D. Our love and devotion to God reflects the depth of our gratitude toward Him (vs. 47b).
E. A lukewarm love for God reveals a lack of gratitude for our forgiveness (vs. 47c).
II. Our Ability to Love and Forgive Others Demonstrates the Love and Forgiveness we have in Christ (Luke 7:48-50).
Questions for Study and Reflection
1. Recall a time when you received the best gift ever. What was it? What was your response to the person who gave you the gift? Recall another time when you received a gift about which you weren’t really excited. What was it? What was your response to the person who gave you the gift? Why the contrast?
2. Read Luke 7:36-50. Who is Simon the Pharisee in terms of his real perceived status in society? What is the probably background story of the woman?
3. Do you agree with point IA above? Why or why not? Is there a difference between the penalty for various sins and different consequence of sin?
4. Do you agree with points IB&C above? Why or why not? Can you give a material example of this in your own life? Can you give a spiritual example of this in another’s life?
5. Do you agree with points ID &E above? Why or why not? Do you believe this should be true? Contrast the response of the woman and the Pharisee in this story.
6. Look at the response of the other guests to Jesus’ words (vss. 48-49). Do you believe they have experienced forgiveness from God? Why or why not? Do you agree with point II? Why or why not?
7. How much have you been forgiven? Could others determine the extent of your forgiveness by your love for God and forgiveness of others? Why or why not? How does it show?
8. This week ponder anew the love and mercy the Lord has lavished upon you. Ask the Lord to renew your love, fervour and gratitude to Him because of the forgiveness you have received. How is this going to be evidenced in your life this week?
