John 3:1-12 – “Kingdom Eyes thru New Birth”
God So Loved Series, Week 1
Sun. Apr. 3rd 2016 - Pastor Stephan
Sermon Outline
I. All People Require New Spiritual Life given Supernaturally by the Holy Spirit (John 3:1-5).
A. People cannot see, enter or experience the KOG unless they are born again (vs. 1-3).
B. Being born again involves cleansing through repentance, symbolized in baptism, and a filling with new life (vs. 4-5, John 1:26-33, Ez. 36:24-28, Titus 3:5).
II. There will be Tangible Evidence of the New Birth in the Life of the Believer (John 3:6-12).
A. The wind is invisible yet known in experience; similarly the Spirit is invisible yet known by His effects (vs. 6-8).
B. Insights into the “new birth” were already foreseen by the OT prophets (vs. 9-12, Joel 2:12-17, 28-32).
III. Being Born Again is Ultimately the Work of the Holy Spirit requiring Our Response.
Questions for Study and Reflection
1. Recall the time when you first heard the expression, “born again.” What did it mean to you then? What does it mean to you now? Do you believe it is necessary that all Christians need to be born again? All people? Explain.
2. Read John 3:1-12. Why is Jesus replying to or answering Nicodemus in vs. 3, i.e. what is the “question” (see vs. 2)?
3. What does it mean to be born again (vs. 3)? When Jesus elaborates for Nicodemus in vs. 5 He adds water. What does He mean by this (Hint: look at the Scriptures cite in point IB above)?
4. Do you agree with point II and the subpoints above? Why or why not? Spend time looking up the OT reference. Are there others you know of?
5. This week take time to reflect upon the evidences of the Spirit’s effects upon your own life. Is a one-time response required, or is it a life-time response that is required?
