Questions for Study and Reflection
1. Think of a time when perhaps your pursuit of some of the good things in life prevented you from recognizing and achieving more of the better or best things in life. What was it? What were the better things? How did you recognize the truth of the situation later?
2. Read John 7:25-39. Explain what is going on in vss. 25-37.
3. Read Lev. 23:24-33. Why were the Israelites supposed to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles? Read Zech. 14:16-19. Why are people from all nations to commemorate the Feast of Tabernacles?
4. Read Joel 2:28-32. What is the relationship in this passage of Joel to the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles and the anticipated outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the days of the Messiah?
5. Why did Jesus wait until the last day of the Feast before doing what He did in vs. 37-39? Why did He stand up and cry out loud?
6. Why does Jesus refer to the Scripture in vs. 38? Which Scripture was He referring to?
7. What are some of the characteristics of a “stream of living water” (vs. 38)? With what would you contrast that? What did that mean for the Israelites who heard Jesus at the temple that day? What was Jesus referring to (vs. 39)? When was this fulfilled?
8. Review point IV and its subpoints along with the associated Scripture. Do you agree or disagree with each? Give examples of each.
9. Reflect this week on what type of water characterizes your life, i.e. would you say streams of living water or something else are coming from within you? How does your belief in Jesus affect the flow of this water and the quality of this water? Is there anything you can do to increase the flow and improve the quality?
