I. Revival is a Sovereign Move of the Spirit which Brings Times of Refreshing to God’s People (2 Chron. 7:14). Revival refers to a spiritual reawakening from a state of dormancy or stagnation in the life of the individual believer, a local church, the church in a city, or churches within a larger geographical area. 2 Chr. 7:14 - … if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Acts 3:19-20 - 19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you-- even Jesus.
II. There are Many Genuine, Spirit-Breathed Marks of Revival (Acts 3:19-20).
A. There was consistently a sense of God’s love, mercy and saving grace in Christ. “Some persons having had such longing desires after Christ, or which have risen to such degree, as to take away their natural strength. Some have been so overcome with a sense of the dying love of Christ to such poor, wretched, and unworthy creatures, as to weaken the body. Several persons have had so great a sense of the glory of God, and excellency of Christ, that nature and life seemed almost to sink under it; and in all probability, if God had showed them a little more of himself, it would have dissolved their frame. . . . And they have talked, when able to speak, of the glory of God's perfections.” Jonathan Edwards
B. People’s esteem for the true Jesus of the Bible is elevated. “If a person’s esteem of the true Jesus is raised, it is a sure sign that the Spirit of God is at work. By “the true Jesus,” I mean this: that Jesus was born of a virgin and crucified outside the gates of Jerusalem; that He is the Son of God and the Savior of men as the gospel declares.” Jonathan Edwards
C. A Holy-Spirit birthed revival means that Satan’s kingdom will be attacked. “The Spirit of God must be at work if the interests of Satan’s kingdom are opposed. This is a sure sign. Satan’s kingdom encourages sin and encourages men to cherish worldly lusts. The Holy Spirit does not.” Jonathan Edwards
D. The Spirit of God is at work when people come to love the Scriptures more. “Would the spirit of error, wanting to deceive men, turn them to God’s infallible Scriptures? Would he lead them to get to know those Scriptures well? Would the prince of darkness lead men to the light of the Sun in order to promote his kingdom of darkness? The devil has always shown how much he hates the Bible. He has always done all he can to put out its light and lead men away from it. He knows that this is the light that will overthrow his dark kingdom.” Jonathan Edwards
E. During times of revival, evangelism will flourish.
F. Joy will be pure and overflowing when the Spirit of God moves in revival.
G. There will be Spirit-birthed physical manifestations during revival.
1 John 4:1 - Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
H. There will always be emotional excesses and false manifestations during times of revival.
I. There will also be divisions among believers during times of revival.
“Let us all be hence warned, by no means to oppose or do anything, in the least to clog or hinder that Work that has lately been carried on in this Land, but on the contrary, to do our utmost to promote it.” Jonathan Edwards
III. As we Await and Prepare for Revival, and Especially when Revival Comes, Believers must Fan the Flames of Personal Devotion to Christ.
What one thing is the Lord placing upon your heart right now as a next step to bring revival to yourself individually? Questions for further study and review: 1. What situation(s) did you face where you were in need of refreshment? Did it come? How? What was the result? 2. Read Acts 3. What is Peter saying specifically in Acts 3:19-20? In what way(s) do these two verses parallel what is said in 2 Chron. 7:14? 3. Review each point under II along with the Jonathan Edwards references when given, and any Scripture or other Scripture that come to mind. Do you agree or disagree with each? Why? Do you have any experience with any of these? 4. Why is it necessary to do what point III suggests before, during and after revival? How is this done? 5. Review the question after point III. What is your plan to accomplish this? Take it to the Lord in prayer this week and ask Him for help.
