Acts 2:42-47 - 42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
I. The Church is a Community of Disciples who are Genuine in their Love of Jesus and Others (Acts 2:42-47a).
A. The believers encountered Jesus and displayed His Presence in their worship and fellowship (vs. 42).
B. God’s power left outsiders in awe and was demonstrated through signs and wonders (vs. 43).
C. The believers’ love overflowed as they sacrificially met material needs (vs. 44-45).
D. Our joy in the Lord and love for one another is attractive to outsiders (vs. 46-47a).
II. Being the Church becomes a Demonstration of Jesus to the Outside World (Acts 2:47b).
III. Pray the Lord would Presence Himself Powerfully at Bethel so that We would be His Witness (Acts 1:4-8). Questions for further study and review: 1. What news about the church has recently caught your attention in the media? What is the general flavor of the media’s portrayal of the church? Why do you think it is so? Is this reflective of your own personal experience? Explain. 2. Read Acts 2:42-47. Skim over what has happened previously in Acts 1 to 2. Why does what is happening here in vs. 42-47 appear almost unbelievable in comparison to the situation of the believers at the beginning of Acts 1? 3. Take a more detailed look at exactly what is occurring in verse 42. What does each of these words mean? Describe what is happening in the life of the early church in your own words. 4. Review in detail points A to D above. Do you agree or disagree with each point? Why or why not? Are your personally experiencing these in the church? Are you personally exhibiting these in your life now, and to what degree? 5. Why is point II above so critical for the church to be everything that God intends her to be? What was it that caused the results as vs. 47b indicate? Be specific. 6. In your quiet times this week, think about how you have and have not experienced the characteristics in A to D above. Think of how you have or have not demonstrated these to others. Write down one or two specific things that you can begin to do over the next weeks and months that may make a significant impact to those around you, both within and outside of Bethel. Then do what point III above is suggesting, beginning with yourself.
