The New Beginning Series, Conclusion
Sun. Feb. 7th 2016 – Pastor Stephan
Sermon Outline
I. Like all Devout Jews Jesus went to the Temple to Celebrate Passover (John 2:12-13).
II. The Temple was the Location of God’s Presence and Redemptive Activity (John 2:14-17).
A. The temple was the unique place on earth where both Jews and Gentiles were to come and worship God (vs. 14; 1 Kgs 8:1-53).
B. The temple leaders had failed to focus the people on worshipping God (vs. 15-16a).
C. Jesus calls worshippers to focus on God’s Presence and call upon Him in prayer (vs. 16b-17).
III. Jesus Himself would become the Focus of God’s Presence and Redemptive Activity (John 2:18-25).
Questions for Study and Reflection
1. Can you think of an item for a purpose for which it was not intended that had disastrous results? What was it? How did things turn out?
2. Read 1 Kings 8:1-53 and Isaiah 56:1-12. By looking up significant passages in these and other Scripture, what is the purpose and significance of the temple in Jerusalem?
3. Read John 2:12-25. Go through the text and answer the following questions: What made Jesus so irate? Why did He do what He did? Why did He say what He said?
4. Take time this week to reflect on point III above. What makes this possible? What is your response? What impact does it make upon your life?
