Friendships that Smart

Sharpening One Another [Or! A sharpness that smarts!]
Pastor Patrick | Really Smart Summer Series Week 5 | Sunday August 13th

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27.17

Outline:
I. Personal and Spiritual Growth is a Communal Affair.
We all need others in our lives to sharpen us and encourage us in our work, our families & ministry.

II. Persistence in Friendship is Important.
True friendship and accountability experiences consistence for what matters in reaching agreed upon goals.

III. Accountability and Forgiveness are Key Ingredients for Authentic Friendships.
Consider the interaction between Paul & Peter in Antioch. [Galatians 2.11-14]

Questions for Group Study & Reflection
1. Discuss one of the best friendships you’ve ever had; what made this friendship so good and how did it affect or change you?

2. Think about the person you would like to become, character you’d like to develop: Whom do you recognise to exhibit these traits and how might you better befriend them?

3. Do you have other “irons” in your life who can help in sharpening you? Thank God for them and be sure to thank them as well!

4. To whom are you the sharpener? Is the relationship reciprocal?

5. Recognise the process takes time: ask God for the strength, stamina and discernment to keep working in your friendships for their good and God’s glory – and leave the results to God!
