As I Have Loved You

John 13:33-35 – “As I Have Loved You”
Sun. May 21st 2017 – Pastor Stephan
Sermon Outline
I. Our Love for One Another is Deficient since we Lack a Biblically Balanced View of God’s Love.
A. The cliché, “God loves everyone exactly the same way”, is simply untrue (Dt. 7:7-8, 10:14-15, Mal. 1:2-3).
B. The cliché, “God’s love is unconditional”, is untrue in many significant ways (John 3:16-18, Rom. 9:10-13).
C. The cliché, “God loves the sinner but hates the sin”, is untrue and unbiblical (Prov. 6:16-19).
II. Jesus Shows Us How to Love One Another: He Loved Others in Truth and with Intentionality (John 13:34-35).
A. Jesus’ love is always other-oriented, hence it is redemptive, risky and sacrificial (John 15:9; Matt. 10:37-38).
B. Jesus’ love is always based upon truth, hence it deals selflessly with reality (Mark 10:11; John 15:13, 13:37-38).
C. Jesus’ always loved intentionally, with authenticity and transparency (Mark 3:13-15).
Questions for Study and Reflection
1. Recall the last time that someone or some group outside of your biological family acted in a loving manner towards you. Briefly describe what transpired. Recall the last time you acted in a loving way to someone or a group outside of your biological family. What was it you did or said? What was it about these actions or words that was loving?
2. Do you believe that Jesus loved some disciples more and some less? What about “the apostle whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23)? What about Judas Iscariot? Do you believe that Jesus, in His humanity, could love all people with the same depth as Peter, James and John? Why or why not?
3. Review each of the points in the sermon outline above with the associated Scripture. Do you agree with each? Why or why not?
4. What are some practical steps that you can take today to begin to love others outside of your normal circles? Do you know of anyone in the church today who could use a loving word or action? Do you think that there may be someone or some group that needs to feel loved by you today?
